Mentioning that the development of large intestine cancers takes place over the years, Prof. Dr. Sücüllü continued as follows:

“The disease mostly develops from benign tumors called polyps in the intestine. The period from a polyp to the development of cancer is usually around 5-7 years. This period allows us to recognize and treat the disease when it is in the polyp stage. It spreads to lymph nodes and adjacent-distant organs, especially those over the age of 50, those with large intestine cancer in their family, those with genetic polyposis, those who eat a high-calorie diet rather than fiber, those with colon polyps or cancer, ovaries, uterus or Those with a history of breast cancer, inflammatory bowel disease for more than 10 years such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are at risk. large intestine and rectum despite data No risk factors were identified in 75 percent of people who developed the cancer. For this reason, it is recommended that even individuals aged 50 and over who have no risk factors or symptoms should be checked by colonoscopy. “


Prof. Dr. Sücüllü listed the precautions to be taken to avoid colon cancer as follows:

“The fecal occult blood test, which will be performed regularly once a year from the age of 50, is important in terms of being an early harbinger of a possible tumor. The fecal occult blood test is actively used in community screening in many countries in terms of practical applicability and cost. The most important diagnosis is also the treatment tool, colonoscopy applications. Colonoscopy allows not only the diagnosis of the tumor, but also the detection at the stage of the polyp and its treatment by colonoscopic removal. It is recommended that those with a family history of colon polyps or cancer should seek genetic counseling if they need to be more sensitive in terms of higher risk.Regular exercise for at least 3 days a week for 30-60 minutes, folic acid, calcium and vitamin D supplements. “Not smoking, increasing the diet with pulp foods, choosing Mediterranean cuisine instead of a diet rich in red meat, increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables and yoghurt significantly reduces the risk of developing colon cancer.”


Pointing out that the most effective treatment of colon cancer is the surgical method, Prof. Dr. Sücüllü said, “Immediately after the diagnosis of cancer, the patient’s condition and treatment planning are planned with the decisions to be taken in multidisciplinary meetings, which include branches such as Oncology and Radiation Oncology. “After the surgical treatment, the patient’s condition is discussed by the same committee and the next follow-up-treatment protocols (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc.) are determined.”
